Context

Setting:

Hamlet, one of Shakespeare’s greatest plays, is said to be set around the 14th and 15th century. The majority of the play takes place in Elsinore castle located in Denmark.

Context:

Though the play itself had multiple version and can be traced back to multiple fictitious works of literature, it is most related to the Saxo Gramaticus legend of Amleth. The character of Hamlet, is almost completely fictitious and parallels multiple characters within the play such as the antagonist: King Claudius. Overall, the play’s context is that of an imaginable one, in which a kingdom is ruled by a King, and diplomacy exists. Other than its dramatic element, nothing is too far fetched or unimaginable within this play.
